The DITA Caper
Working with FrameMaker, when you use the menu (DITA > New DITA File) and choose a topic type (topic, task, concept, reference), FrameMaker creates a new file that starts with the "dita" element.
If you plan to create small FrameMaker files that will be components of longer files (such as several topics that will later be combined into a chapter file), note that you will need to ensure your component files do not start with the "dita" element.
Keeping DITA simple
When thinking in terms of technical writing, one might at times confuse the people involved with documenting the software with those actually writing it.
The DITA Open Toolkit, or DITA-OT for short, is a set of Java-based, open source tools that provide processing for DITA maps and topical content. You can download the DITA-OT and install it for free on your computer, or you may already have a copy bundled together with your authoring tool or CMS.
